・ やっと(かろうじて)～できる：I could barely do
・～を…に突き刺す：stick ～ in …
・固い：tough
→食べ物（特に肉）が固い場合に使われる
tough: meat that is tough is too hard and is difficult to cut or eat

The meat was very hard to the extent that I managed to stick a fork into it.
ネイティブからのアドバイス
‘to the extent that’ is a bit awkward. However, it is not wrong grammatically. You can use ‘so hard that I’ to show how hard the meat was.
→’…to the extent that ～を、「～するほど…」の意味で考えたが、変だと言われた。so ～ that構文を使うのが良い。
