I made one change to this sentence in order to make it sound a little more natural. I replaced the word ‘couldn’t’ with ‘didn’t’, as the latter sounded much more natural in this context. Typically, ‘couldn’t’ refers to being unable to do something in the past.
For instance: I was so tired I couldn’t speak.
However, in this case you are referring to a lack of time rather than an inability to perform a task. Therefore, ‘didn’t’ is more appropriate than ‘couldn’t’. You do not need to change anything else, but here is another version of the sentence which you may wish to consider:
Keeping the house tidy was so hard that she had no time to read books.
Although the meaning of this option is very similar to that of the original sentence, it is slightly more emphatic because ‘had no time’ sounds stronger than ‘didn’t have any time’.
